‎The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has opened applications for its first Africa-based cohort of the AI Fellows Program. This 12-month limited-term employment opportunity places talented AI professionals inside the Foundation’s Africa team to apply artificial intelligence to high-priority challenges in global health, development, and education across Sub-Saharan Africa.
‎
‎Applications close on November 11, 2026. Positions are based in Abuja (Nigeria), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Johannesburg (South Africa), or Nairobi (Kenya). Candidates must already have the legal right to work in the chosen country meaning no visa sponsorship or relocation support will be provided.

‎Why The Gates Foundation AI Fellowship Matters

The AI Fellows Program aims to accelerate the responsible and impactful use of AI for public good. Building on earlier cohorts in the United States and India, the Africa expansion embeds fellows directly with regional teams, partners, and government counterparts. The goal is practical: turn frontier AI, machine learning, and large language models into tools that improve decision-making and service delivery where the stakes are highest.
‎
‎Africa faces well-documented constraints in health systems, supply chains, public financial management, and agricultural support. AI can help unify fragmented data, flag risks earlier, and support better resource allocation—provided solutions are grounded in local realities, ethically designed, and built for real institutional use rather than pilots that never scale.

‎What Fellows Will Do

‎Each fellow is assigned one or two high-priority projects. Core responsibilities include:
‎
· ‎Partnering with the Africa team and project sponsors to scope practical AI solutions rooted in user needs and local constraints.
· ‎Building rapid prototypes with modern LLMs and AI tools to test feasibility and generate insights.
· ‎Designing, evaluating, and validating machine learning models and data pipelines while upholding data integrity, security, and software engineering standards.
· ‎Supporting internal AI literacy through workshops, guides, and mentoring on responsible adoption in low- and middle-income country contexts.
· ‎Embedding equity, bias mitigation, explainability, and data privacy into technical work.

Sample project areas include:

· ‎Decision-support tools that unify disparate financing flow systems across countries, diagnose bottlenecks, and inform better decisions.
· ‎Solutions to reduce stockouts of essential medicines at district and facility levels, using predictive analytics to flag risks and identify redistribution opportunities (especially relevant as some countries face reduced external logistics support).
· ‎AI tools for health planning that rank interventions against budget ceilings and track them through procurement and cash-release cycles.
‎
‎Fellows work at the intersection of technical depth and real-world delivery, collaborating with multilaterals, NGOs, governments, and other partners.

Eligibility Requirements

‎Strong candidates typically bring:
‎
· ‎A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.
· ‎At least two years of experience applying AI solutions, preferably in health systems, public financial management, or agricultural systems. Experience can come from professional roles, research, internships, or substantial applied projects.
· ‎Technical proficiency in modern AI/ML modeling, model evaluation, and hands-on work with large language models (prompting, retrieval, fine-tuning, or deployment), combined with solid software engineering and data skills.
· ‎Strong communication and collaboration abilities—the capacity to explain complex technical ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
· ‎A demonstrated commitment to applying AI responsibly for public good and measurable development impact.
‎
‎Legal work authorization in one of the four host countries is non-negotiable.

Benefits and Professional Opportunity

This is paid, full-time limited-term employment with the Foundation’s competitive benefits package (comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with no premiums for employees and families, generous paid time off, paid family leave, retirement contributions, and regional holidays).
‎
‎Beyond compensation, the role offers:
‎
· ‎Direct contribution to high-visibility projects that can accelerate outcomes for millions of people.
· ‎Access to the Foundation’s global network spanning more than 140 countries.
· ‎Mentorship from leaders in AI, health, and development, plus career-defining experience applying frontier technology in complex, high-impact settings.
· ‎The chance to help build AI capacity and responsible practices within the Foundation’s Africa operations and partner ecosystem.

‎How to Apply

‎Applications are to be submitted through the Gates Foundation careers portal (Workdays only). Search for “AI Fellow – Africa Regional Offices” (Job Requisition ID B021830) or use the direct posting linked from opportunity aggregators. Review the full job description carefully, confirm work eligibility for your preferred location, and prepare materials that clearly demonstrate relevant AI experience and impact orientation.
‎
‎Deadline: November 11, 2026.
‎
‎Africa’s AI talent is growing rapidly, yet opportunities to apply advanced skills at scale inside institutions that shape health, education, and development systems remain relatively scarce. This first Africa-based AI Fellows cohort is one such opportunity—demanding technically, grounded in real delivery challenges, and explicitly oriented toward public impact.
‎
‎If you have the technical foundation, relevant experience, and a clear motivation to use AI for measurable good in African contexts, this is a call worth answering. Prepare a strong application that shows both capability and purpose, and apply before the deadline.
