Keyamo said the contactless system is designed to address inconsistencies in passenger data and eliminate cases of unauthorised boarding.

According to him, VPASS will ensure proper identification of all domestic passengers, extending the kind of strict verification processes already in place for international travel.

The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development says this new biometric passenger verification system will strengthen airport security and boost Nigerian revenue across Nigeria’s domestic aviation sector.

For businesses operating within the aviation value chain, the implications are significant. More reliable passenger data could improve demand forecasting, pricing strategies, and operational planning for airlines, while also boosting confidence in Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.

Implementation is expected to begin with infrastructure deployment, followed by a nationwide sensitisation campaign to drive public awareness and compliance.

Deployment will begin with infrastructure rollout by VERXID Technologies Limited, followed by a nationwide awareness campaign to ensure smooth adoption among passengers and stakeholders.

How VPASS Works

OnBoarding: VPASS utilizes advanced AI facial recognition technology to verify passengers from check-in to boarding using High-performance cameras that captures live images and matches it against the stored digital template.

AI Verification: The VPASS system links passengers’ National Identification Numbers (NIN) to airport databases, enabling seamless, contactless verification using facial recognition technology.

Security & Data Integrity: The system aligns with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards by linking passengers’ National Identification Numbers (NIN) to airport databases to prevent identity theft and fraudulent boarding.

VPASS is a public-private partnership aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, and strengthening national security.

This innovative security system eliminates the need for paper documentation, speeds up airport processing times, and rapidly improves revenue tracking for airlines.

Successful Proofs of Concept (PoCs) indicate that contactless, biometric enabled international travel is already very achievable with digital identity replacing paper documentation. Working together as part of the IATA Strategic Partnerships Program, partners tested how digital identity stored in mobile wallets and biometric verification can support seamless passenger journeys without repeated paper document checks.

Nigeria’s VPASS Rollout at Nigerian Airports is going to enhance security and meet help Nigerian Airports meet international standards. VPASS will help in the detection of high profile international criminals, drug traffickers and cyber Criminals at Nigerian Airports.
