In a striking contrast of priorities, Uber Technologies shut down its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria on September 2, 2026, and less than a day later launched the United Kingdom’s first public robotaxi service in London.
The timing underscores the company’s ongoing global restructuring as it shifts resources toward autonomous vehicles while retreating from certain markets facing economic and operational pressures.
Uber confirmed it would cease operations in Nigeria (and separately in Uganda) effective September 2, 2026, ending a 12-year presence that began with its Lagos launch in 2014. In a message to users, the company stated: “After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026.”
The move came amid intense competition in Nigeria’s ride-hailing sector, rising fuel and maintenance costs, inflation, and currency volatility that squeezed both drivers and platforms. Uber said the decision was limited to Nigeria and Uganda and would not affect its remaining operations in Africa (Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa). Its help centre was set to remain available until September 23 to handle outstanding issues.
The exit formed part of a broader global restructuring that also involved cutting about 3,300 jobs—roughly 10% of Uber’s workforce—focused largely on management and coordination roles. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi framed the changes as simplifying structures and concentrating investment on the biggest future opportunities.
London Robotaxi Launch
On September 3, 2026, Uber and British autonomous-vehicle startup Wayve began offering robotaxi rides through the Uber app in London—the first commercial self-driving taxi service available to the public in the UK.
A small initial fleet of around 15 electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles, equipped with Wayve’s AI Driver technology (cameras and radar providing 360-degree visibility), entered service. Riders requesting UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric can be matched with one of these vehicles at the same price as a conventional ride. They can accept or decline the robotaxi option. For now, a Transport for London-licensed safety driver sits in the front seat to monitor the system and intervene if needed. Fully driverless operations will require additional regulatory approval and are not expected immediately. Uber handles rider support; Wayve oversees the autonomous technology. The companies have described London to be one of the world’s most challenging driving environments with its narrow, historic streets as a key proving ground.
Uber’s Global Head of Autonomous Mobility, Sarfraz Maredia, called the London launch “a major milestone in scaling safe, accessible AV technology.” Wayve CEO Alex Kendall highlighted the significance of debuting the technology in the company’s home city. London is the first of multiple planned cities in the Uber-Wayve partnership (Tokyo is expected later). Uber has stated ambitions to become a major facilitator of autonomous trips globally by the end of the decade.
What the Timing Reveals
The near-simultaneous announcements highlight Uber’s strategic pivot. After more than a decade in Nigeria where it helped popularize app-based ride-hailing and created earning opportunities for thousands of drivers.
Now the company is withdrawing from markets it views as less viable under current economic conditions. At the same time, it is accelerating investment in autonomous mobility, partnering with specialists like Wayve and expanding robotaxi testing and commercial service in high-potential cities.
For Nigerian riders and drivers, the exit ends a familiar service and shifts demand toward local and regional competitors. For Londoners, the robotaxi option introduces a new (still supervised) way to travel, with the promise of eventual fully driverless rides as regulations evolve.
Uber’s decision to exit challenging traditional markets while pushing into the next generation of transportation, illustrates the pressures and opportunities facing global mobility platforms in 2026. Whether robotaxis can deliver the scale and profitability Uber seeks remains an open question, but the company is clearly betting that the future lies more in software-driven autonomy than in expanding conventional ride-hailing everywhere.
