The Federal Government of Nigeria has committed more than ₦10.5 billion to the newly launched Digital Training Academy (DTA), a major initiative designed to equip over 32,000 young Nigerians with high-demand digital and professional skills. The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, at the official launch of the Academy in Abuja on Monday.
This investment forms part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is being implemented under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI). The programme aims to close Nigeria’s digital skills gap, boost employability, and open pathways for Nigerians to secure remote work with global companies without leaving the country.
Beneficiaries will undergo six months of free training delivered through leading global platforms, including Coursera and Pluralsight. Successful participants will earn internationally recognised certifications from top technology firms. Training covers critical areas such as:
- Cybersecurity
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning
- Cloud computing
- Software development and IT automation
- Fintech and product management
- Natural language processing
- Quantum computing
These skills are chosen to align with global demand and position graduates for both local opportunities and international remote roles.
To ensure inclusivity, the Federal Government has partnered with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH). These institutions will provide study centres, internet access, and facilitators for learners who lack personal devices or reliable connectivity. This arrangement helps remove common barriers that prevent many Nigerians from accessing quality digital education.
The Academy also serves as a certification pathway for participants of the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme and complements the National Talent Export Programme (NATEP), which seeks to create one million export-linked digital jobs by 2027. Officials have emphasised that success will ultimately be measured not just by the number of certificates issued, but by how many beneficiaries secure meaningful employment, grow their businesses, or apply their skills to real-world challenges.
Nigeria’s youthful population represents a significant demographic advantage, yet a persistent skills mismatch has limited many young people’s access to the digital economy. By fully funding licences and access for 32,000 learners across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, the government is making a direct investment in human capital. Digital identity systems, highlighted by the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), will further support access to education, jobs, and financial services linked to the programme.
Early indicators show strong interest: the Academy previously received tens of thousands of applications for its initial cohorts, with selection based on pre-assessment scores and readiness for different learning pathways. Training centres equipped with devices and connectivity have been established nationwide to broaden participation.
The Digital Training Academy represents more than an online learning portal. It creates a structured pathway from skills acquisition to certification and, ideally, to productive employment or entrepreneurship. As Nigeria pursues ambitions of building a larger, more competitive economy, initiatives like this aim to ensure that a growing number of citizens can participate fully in the global digital marketplace.
