The Nigeria Innovation Cluster Exchange (NICE) has opened applications for its Pipeline Clinics, a targeted business development programme designed to help Nigerian entrepreneurs and enterprises strengthen operations, overcome growth barriers, and build more sustainable businesses. The clinics focus on six priority innovation clusters spanning agro-processing, manufacturing, health, minerals, and cybersecurity.
Implemented by The Nest Innovation Technology Park in partnership with the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub under the UK Government’s Digital Access Programme and in collaboration with the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI), the initiative marks a practical next step in NICE’s broader effort to address fragmentation in Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem.
NICE was launched in July 2026 as a pilot programme to transform Nigeria’s rapidly growing but often siloed startup and innovation landscape into a more coordinated, data-driven national network.
At the time, organisers highlighted persistent challenges: high youth underemployment over 53% according to National Bureau of Statistics data cited at launch and low startup survival rates, with fewer than 10% of startups lasting beyond their third year.
Entrepreneurship Support Organisations (ESOs), research institutions, hubs, and startups frequently operated in isolation, limiting collaboration, knowledge sharing, and scale.
The programme’s early phase involved desk and field research to map innovation activities, stakeholders, and opportunities. This work identified six priority clusters based on existing strengths and potential:
- Kano – Agro-processing
- Abia – Manufacturing
- Ogun – Manufacturing
- Oyo – Health
- Akwa Ibom – Minerals
- Abuja – Cybersecurity
These locations and sectors align with Nigeria’s economic diversification goals, including food security, industrialisation, healthcare delivery, resource value addition, and digital resilience.
What the Pipeline Clinics Offer?
Unlike generic entrepreneurship training, the Pipeline Clinics are sector- and cluster-specific. They aim to equip participants with practical tools and connections to address real operational and commercialisation challenges. Key focus areas include:
- Innovation management
- Access to facilities and partners
- Prototyping support
- Partnership development
- Peer exchange and learning
Experts-in-Residence from the UK will provide specialised input on innovation strategy, incubation models, and technology validation. The UK-Nigeria Tech Hub has emphasised that strong local innovation clusters are essential to unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential, stating that the clinics will equip businesses with the tools, networks, and support needed to strengthen competitiveness, tackle local challenges, and scale sustainable solutions.
Following the clinics and expert exchanges, NICE plans to progress to collaborative innovation sprints. In these later stages, participating clusters will work with Nigerian and UK partners to co-develop and validate solutions around identified challenges, potentially producing prototypes and proof-of-concept projects.
The programme also incorporates a governance structure with Cluster Coordinators and Cluster Councils to promote local ownership, coordination, and long-term continuity beyond the pilot phase.
Who Can Apply and Selection Priorities
Applications are open to Nigerian-owned or Nigeria-based businesses and enterprises that already have an existing business, startup, prototype, product, service, or clearly defined business model. Applicants must:
- Operate within, support, or demonstrate strong relevance to at least one of the six priority clusters
- Have a clear business challenge, growth opportunity, or development need that the programme can address
- Be willing to commit the necessary time, share relevant business information for assessment, and apply the learning and recommendations
Priority may be given to businesses showing growth potential, innovative offerings, market traction, expansion opportunities, investment readiness, job-creation potential, or the ability to contribute meaningfully to their local innovation cluster.
This focus on businesses that already have some traction rather than pure idea-stage founders is deliberate. Many Nigerian innovators develop promising products or services but struggle to secure technical expertise, research partnerships, production capacity, market access, or investment needed to scale. The clinics seek to bridge that gap.
Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem has expanded significantly, with hundreds of hubs and a growing number of startups in fintech, agritech, healthtech, and other sectors. Cities beyond Lagos and Abuja are emerging as important centres of activity. At the same time, coordination gaps persist, and the commercialisation pathway from prototype to sustainable enterprise remains challenging for many.
By concentrating support within defined geographic and sectoral clusters, NICE aims to create denser networks of businesses, support organisations, researchers, and partners who can interact more effectively. Success will ultimately be measured less by participation numbers and more by tangible outcomes: investment secured, markets entered, production expanded, and sustainable jobs created by participating businesses.
