The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has opened applications for its Internship Programme for the 2027/2028 cycle. This opportunity allows eligible students to gain hands-on experience in trade finance, international trade, and the operations of one of Africa’s leading multilateral financial institutions.
Afreximbank, headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, was established to finance and promote intra- and extra-African trade. The internship forms part of the Bank’s broader mandate to build capacity and deepen understanding of African trade challenges and structured trade finance which makes up its core operating model. Interns are expected to contribute fresh ideas while developing practical knowledge they can apply in their future careers.
Applications are currently open, with a deadline of 31 October 2026. The official Afreximbank page lists the opportunity as open-ended, with placements offered twice a year typically starting in January and June. Candidates are encouraged to apply early, as spaces are limited and selection is highly competitive and merit-based.
Who Can Apply?
The programme targets young talent aligned with Afreximbank’s mission. Eligibility criteria include:
- Proof of enrollment in a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programme at a recognised institution during the year of the internship. Preferred fields of study include economics, business administration, finance, accounting, social sciences, statistics, law, sciences, engineering, or related disciplines.
- Age between 20 and 32 in the year of application.
- Nationality: Nationals of Afreximbank Group member countries (a list is available on the Afreximbank’s website), students of African descent in the diaspora, or non-African students whose vision for Africa’s transformation resonates with the Bank’s mission.
- Fluency in English or French, with a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese is an added advantage.
- Children of Afreximbank staff are not eligible.
Programme Duration and Location
Internships last a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months. Most placements are based at the Bank’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, though opportunities may also arise at other Group locations (including regional offices). The internship is not virtual; successful candidates must relocate to the assigned location.
Upon arrival, interns undergo the Group’s induction process, are attached to a primary department with a mentor, and may rotate across value-chain departments. At the end of the programme, participants must submit a report detailing what they learned and how they intend to apply that knowledge to promote the transformation of Africa and its diaspora.
Benefits and Support Package
Afreximbank provides meaningful financial and logistical support so interns can focus on learning:
- Monthly tax-free stipend of USD $1,000.
- Additional housing allowance of USD $500 per month for interns relocating from their home countries payable at the end of each month.
- Coverage of reasonable return economy-class airfare (most economical and direct routing) from the intern’s institution of learning, in line with the Bank’s travel policy.
- One week of hotel accommodation (bed and breakfast only) during the induction period, plus airport transfers on arrival and departure.
- Assistance with the relevant residence visa for the duration of the internship, if required.
Interns are responsible for their own upkeep (including ongoing accommodation, meals, transport, and clothing) beyond the support listed above. They must also provide evidence of valid medical insurance and group personal accident cover valid in Egypt (or the assigned location) before starting. Failure to do so results in automatic withdrawal of the offer.
Note that the internship does not constitute employment or carry any promise of future employment with the Bank. Interns are linked to the Team Support grade for any incidental allowances and must abide by the Group’s regulations.
