The federal government has officially commissioned and handed over the Renewed Hope-NITDA Innovation Hub, a new AI and robotics innovation hub at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife to strengthen Nigeria’s digital innovation ecosystem and equip young people with future-ready technology skills.
The technology hub was unveiled on Monday, June 8, by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during a ceremony at the institution.
Established by the National Information Technology Development Agency in partnership with the Renewed Hope Initiative, the hub is fitted with cutting-edge laboratories dedicated to artificial intelligence, robotics, additive manufacturing and the Internet of Things.
The facility is designed to close the gap between classroom learning and the practical demands of the global technology industry, giving students and the broader university community access to infrastructure that has historically been out of reach for most Nigerian institutions.
Speaking at the unveiling, Tijani described the hub as an investment in the capacity and creativity of Nigerian youth rather than simply a collection of equipment and laboratories.
“Innovation does not come from buildings; it comes from people,” he said. “Before all these buildings, this university had been producing talent, innovators, and people who have changed our country for good. It is not these buildings alone that will do it,” he added.
According to the minister, while the hub will serve the broader community, its primary objective is to provide students with a platform to transform academic knowledge into real-world innovations capable of addressing societal and economic challenges.
The facility includes four specialised laboratories focused on some of the most in-demand areas of the global technology industry. These include artificial intelligence, robotics, additive manufacturing—commonly known as 3D printing—and the Internet of Things.
The inclusion of additive manufacturing is expected to expose students to emerging industrial applications across sectors such as healthcare, construction and aerospace. Meanwhile, the robotics and IoT laboratories provide opportunities for hardware-based innovation, an area where many Nigerian startups face challenges due to limited access to equipment and prototyping facilities.
The new innovation hub is expected to support research, skills development, startup creation and technological innovation, while strengthening Nigeria’s position within the global digital economy.
