The third edition of the Innovate Africa Challenge, jointly organized by Smart Africa and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is now open for applications.
Under the theme “From Ideation to Deployment”, this edition focuses on moving proven AI solutions beyond prototypes and pilots into real-world use with farmers. The selected solution will receive US$50,000 to support deployment, validation, and scaling in collaboration with governments, FAO country offices, and the Smart Africa Secretariat.
Africa’s agrifood systems face mounting pressure from climate variability, shifting pest patterns, unpredictable rainfall, and limited access to timely, location-specific information—especially for the smallholder farmers who produce most of the continent’s food. At the same time, advances in artificial intelligence, digital agriculture, and data-driven tools offer powerful opportunities to improve productivity, resource efficiency, climate resilience, and decision-making.
The persistent gap is implementation. Many promising innovations remain stuck at the pilot stage and are rarely integrated into national agricultural systems or deployed at meaningful scale. The 2026 Innovate Africa Challenge directly addresses this by prioritizing solutions that already work in the field and are ready for structured deployment and validation under real African farming conditions.
The challenge prioritizes AI-driven solutions for climate-smart agriculture in areas such as:
- Precision agriculture and input optimization
- Crop yield prediction and forecasting
- Pest and disease surveillance, detection, and early warning
- Climate risk modelling and adaptive decision support
- Water and natural resource optimization
Solutions should deliver reliable, actionable insights for farmers, extension services, or agricultural institutions. They must be capable of operating effectively in environments marked by smallholder and informal farming systems, incomplete or low-frequency data, mobile-first and low-connectivity settings, multilingual contexts, diverse agro-ecological zones, and potential integration with national extension or ministry systems.
Who Can Apply
The call is open to startups, innovators, and solution developers actively developing or deploying AI-driven climate-smart agriculture solutions. Applicants should demonstrate technological maturity, commitment to measurable impact, pathways to scaling, and financial sustainability.
Eligible countries (this edition is restricted to applicants from):
Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, and Uganda.
Participants must also adhere to responsible AI and data governance principles, including compliance with data protection and privacy rules, explainable AI practices suitable for agricultural decisions, bias identification and mitigation (especially regarding gender, geography, and farming systems), respect for farmer data rights and consent, and confidentiality requirements.
What the Winner Receives
The selected solution will receive USD 50,000 to support deployment, validation, and scaling with farmers. Implementation will take place in partnership with relevant national ministries (Agriculture, ICT, Innovation), the Smart Africa Secretariat, FAO country offices, and technical experts. Expected outcomes include a context-validated, scalable AI solution delivering measurable improvements in farmer decision-making, productivity, and climate resilience; stronger multi-stakeholder collaboration; and evidence and lessons that can inform wider adoption across Smart Africa Member States.
