‎STAR ⭐20-year-old Nigerian Inventor Develops AI-Powered Smart glasses to help Blind people navigate independently

‎‎Khalifa Aminu, a 20-year-old self-taught inventor from Kano, Nigeria, has developed an AI-powered smart glass designed to help visually impaired people detect obstacles, navigate independently, and stay connected to caregivers.


‎‎His project, evolving from early sensor-based prototypes into “Glass V2” with AI, sensors, GPS, and planned voice features, has drawn national and international attention. It highlights grassroots African innovation addressing real mobility challenges in a country where millions live with visual impairment.

‎‎STAR ⭐ Inventor Aminu was born and raised in areas of Kano State including Gobirawa Quarters in Dala Local Government Area and Sharada. He began inventing as a child, long before formal secondary school but Financial constraints interrupted his education.

‎He attended Abba Naliti Primary School and started at Government Secondary School, Gwammaja, but could not complete secondary studies smoothly. He later finished his SSCE with community support.

‎‎During an interview with SeedufyTech, Aminu describes teaching himself engineering through Google, YouTube, and AI tools, experimenting with affordable, locally available electronics rather than formal labs or funding.

‎‎STAR ⭐ Inventor Aminu says: “I grew up in an area where there are a lot of visually impaired people, and I understand what they’re going through,” he said. His aim was a technology-based alternative that restores greater independence and dignity.

‎The glasses project began around 2023 after Aminu observed visually impaired people in his community struggling with daily mobility and heavy reliance on canes, guides, or others.

‎‎Early versions of his smart glasses, used ultrasonic and infrared sensors mounted on glasses frames. These detected nearby obstacles and alerted the wearer via beeping sounds and later vibration in some descriptions. A visually impaired man in Aminu’s community tested the prototype, found it effective for navigation, and suggested improvements: a wireless switch, smaller/more compact components, black lenses, and clearer alerts. Aminu incorporated this feedback while working within severe resource limits.

‎‎The newer iteration called Glass V2 or AI Smart Glass adds artificial intelligence, improved tracking, GPS, and a camera/sensor system for real-time obstacle detection. According to STAR ⭐ Innovator Aminu, the device can:

‎- Detect objects and obstacles ahead and provide alerts (sound, vibration, or alarms) before the user reaches them.

‎- Use GPS for location awareness.

‎- If the user appears lost (AI learning frequent routes and flagging unfamiliar ones), send the location to a caregiver’s phone via WhatsApp or email.

‎‎- Progress toward voice interaction so the glasses can describe surroundings and converse with the user rather than only beep.

‎His earlier projects include a radio transmitter (around 87.5 MHz with multi-kilometer range), an automatic water sprayer for farmers, a bomb/IED and solid minerals detector, drones, boats, security systems, inverters, and even experimental brain-signal interfaces for device control.

‎‎The STAR ⭐ Inventor has received recognition such as a 2024 Indomie Heroes Award and support from groups including the Kano Patriotic Front (equipment, laptop, workspace, and education sponsorship) and interest from Nigeria’s National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. Former Communications Minister Isa Ali Pantami has also publicly endorsed his work.

‎Aminu has been open that his AI powered glasses for Blind and visually impaired patients remains a work-in-progress prototype requiring further refinement, smaller form factors, better day/night performance, and resources.

‎Nigeria faces a substantial burden of visual impairment. Estimates indicate over 4.2 million people are blind or visually impaired, with many cases linked to preventable or treatable conditions such as cataract, glaucoma, and uncorrected refractive errors. National survey data have shown blindness prevalence around 4.2% among adults aged 40+, with higher rates in certain ecological zones and among older or less-educated populations.

‎Visual disability ranks among the most common functional limitations. Access to eye care remains limited (far below middle-income country averages), and traditional mobility aids like white canes, while valuable, do not always provide rich environmental information or caregiver connectivity in complex urban or rural settings.

‎Affordable, locally developed tools like Aminu’s AI Powered Glasses that enhance independence can reduce isolation, support education and economic participation, and ease pressure on families and limited formal support systems. Aminu’s approach begins with scavenged or low-cost parts and iterating based on real user feedback, exemplifies practical, context-aware innovation.

‎‎The combination of obstacle detection, GPS/caregiver alerts, and emerging AI/voice features points toward richer environmental awareness for users. As development continues, the key questions are technical reliability across varied Nigerian environments, affordability and local manufacturability, user-centered design refinements, and pathways to wider distribution.

‎Scaling from handmade prototypes to durable, affordable, certified products usable across Nigeria and West Africa is the critical next step. STAR ⭐ Inventor Aminu, has repeatedly noted the need for funding, better components, technical partnerships and sustained investment to scale manufacturing in Nigeria, Africa and Worldwide.


‎‎STAR ⭐ Inventor Khalifa Aminu is not claiming a finished commercial product that fully replaces established mobility aids. He is demonstrating that a determined young person in Kano, working with limited means, can build functional prototypes that address a genuine human need and iterate toward more intelligent, voice-enabled systems.
