China Invent Hydrogen Powered Scooters

Posted by

‎China’s Hydrogen Powered Scooters are emerging as a practical zero-emission alternative to lithium-battery electric bikes, with growing commercial deployments in cities such as Chengdu, Baotou, Hubei, and beyond.

‎These vehicles typically use a small hydrogen fuel cell paired with low-pressure solid-state hydrogen storage.

‎‎A cartridge holding roughly 80–200 g of hydrogen powers a range of about 80–120+ km depending on the model while Refueling is done by swapping the storage cartridge in 30 seconds to a few minutes, rather than waiting for a battery charge.

‎Key advantages

‎- Zero tailpipe emissions — the only byproduct is water vapor, supporting China’s clean-mobility and carbon-reduction goals.

‎‎- Superior safety — solid-state storage operates at very low pressure often ≤2 MPa, greatly reducing fire/explosion risk compared with lithium batteries which have seen thousands of e-bike fire incidents annually. This has helped the vehicles gain regulatory approval in cities restricting lithium e-bikes.

‎‎- Fast energy replenishment — cartridge swap is far quicker than charging, ideal for shared fleets, delivery riders, and high-utilization scenarios.

‎‎- Better cold-weather performance — range remains largely stable even at –10 °C to –20 °C, unlike lithium batteries that lose significant capacity in winter.

‎‎- Longer effective range and higher energy density for the weight/size, plus potentially longer component life. This comes as solid-state storage withstands far more cycles than typical lithium packs.

‎‎Companies such as Qinglv Technology, Zhongyu, and others have scaled pilots into tens of thousands of units, with shared fleets already logging millions of rides and expanding both domestically and toward export markets. While upfront vehicle costs remain higher than lithium models, scale-up and falling hydrogen costs are expected to narrow the gap.
