‎The Africa Deep Tech Challenge (ADTC) 2026 is live, and early-stage builders across the continent have a clear opportunity to turn constrained hardware into a competitive advantage. Themed “The Laptop LLM Challenge,” the competition invites developers, engineers, researchers, students, and innovators to create practical, fully offline language-model applications that run on the everyday laptops millions of Africans already own.

‎‎The grand prize is $8,000 in cash, plus a six-month scale-up residency that includes pilot matchmaking, a Venture Demo Day invitation, legal and patent support, and the ADTC Certified badge. Total support across cash awards and non-cash benefits reaches approximately $20,000.

‎‎Why This Challenge Matters

Cloud-based large language models demand reliable internet, ongoing API fees, and steady power—barriers that remain real for students in Lagos, clinic workers in Arusha, farmers, and small-business owners across the continent. ADTC 2026 flips the script: instead of waiting for better infrastructure, builders must deliver useful AI that works on commodity hardware with integrated graphics and tight memory limits.

‎The target machine is the ADTC Standard Laptop which is typically an Intel Core i5 (10th–12th gen) or AMD Ryzen 5 equivalent, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, integrated graphics only, 256 GB SSD, running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Models must stay within a 7 GB RAM ceiling during evaluation. Exceeding it or crashing results in disqualification. Thermal throttling or temperatures above 85°C also incurs penalties.

‎What You Need to Build

‎Participants create a working, end-to-end, on-device language-model application with zero cloud dependencies. Submissions must use llama.cpp and GGUF weights for evaluation compatibility. Teams choose one primary domain:

‎‎Cross-disciplinary integration is expected—think offline RAG over local agricultural records, edge-aware medical support, or privacy-focused workflow agents. Meaningful support for at least one African language (Swahili, Yoruba, Hausa, Amharic, Zulu, and others) earns a 15% panel score bonus.

‎‎Judging combines objective hardware metrics (accuracy 50%, performance/speed 30%, efficiency/RAM use 20%, minus thermal penalties) with qualitative assessment of usefulness, documentation, and African relevance.

‎Eligibility and Timeline

‎Open to individuals or teams of up to three people who reside in eligible African countries and are above the legal age of majority. The challenge prioritizes early-stage builders: projects or companies should generally be under 12 months old as of the June 2026 launch, and solutions should be at the ideation, conceptual, or early prototype stage.

‎Gate 1 requires an open-source GitHub repository (using the official ADTC 2026 template), a structured REPORT.md, screenshots or clips of the model running, and a 2-minute demo video explaining the solution and journey. A free open-source local profiler is available so teams can test latency, throughput, memory, and thermal behavior on target-like hardware before submitting.
