Posted by

‎Applications are open for the second edition of the AfCFTA Digital Innovation Challenge 2026. Young African innovators, startups, and entrepreneurs have until 4 September 2026 to submit digital solutions that help micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) trade more easily across African borders.

‎The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat launched the challenge to identify, nurture, and scale practical digital tools that advance the AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade and the Protocol on Women and Youth in Trade. The initiative builds on the inaugural edition and focuses on African-developed solutions that reduce barriers to cross-border trade and support a more integrated African digital market.

‎Theme and Focus

‎The challenge carries the theme “Shaping Africa’s Future Through African Solutions” (also framed in announcements as “Realising the AfCFTA for MSMEs through Digital Solutions”). It targets bold, scalable digital innovations that make intra-African trade more accessible, efficient, and inclusive for MSMEs.

‎‎Solutions should address real barriers such as limited market access, fragmented logistics, complex payments and compliance, information gaps, and other frictions that prevent small businesses from fully benefiting from the AfCFTA. Preferred solutions are already operational and ready to scale rather than pure concepts.

‎‎Drawing from the programme’s emphasis and prior editions, relevant areas typically include:

‎- Market intelligence and e-commerce platforms (B2B/B2C marketplaces, trade data tools)

‎- E-commerce and logistics (warehousing, last-mile delivery, aggregation)

‎- Digital financial services (cross-border payments, trade finance, insurance)

‎- Trade facilitation and compliance tools

‎- Cross-border professional services delivery

‎- Skills development and capacity-building platforms for MSMEs

‎‎Integration of advanced technologies such as AI or blockchain is viewed favourably when it demonstrably improves effectiveness.

‎‎Who Can Apply

‎Eligibility is open to:

‎- Individuals, teams, startups, and enterprises from African Union Member States

‎- African innovators and entrepreneurs aged 18–35

‎- Solutions that are in the operational to scaling phase (not pure ideation)

‎- Applicants who can clearly show how their digital solution reduces cross-border trade barriers and supports AfCFTA implementation, particularly for MSMEs

‎Women and youth-led innovations receive particular encouragement, in line with the Protocols on Digital Trade and on Women and Youth in Trade.

‎Evaluation Criteria

‎Applications are assessed on:

‎1. Proven impact— Evidence that the solution facilitates cross-border trade and benefits MSMEs.

‎2. Relevance to AfCFTA objectives — Clear alignment with digital trade facilitation for goods and services.

‎3. Operational excellence — Robust technology, strong user experience, and reliable backend systems.

‎4. Scalability and expansion potential — Realistic plans and capability to expand into multiple African markets and adapt to different regulatory environments.

‎5. Digital innovation — Effective use (or clear potential use) of advanced technologies that enhance trade facilitation.

‎Selection aims for equitable regional and gender representation.

‎‎Benefits and Support for Selected Innovators

‎‎The challenge offers tiered support rather than focusing solely on cash prizes:

‎‎Top 50 shortlisted innovators receive:

‎‎Top 10 winners receive:

‎- Opportunities to showcase solutions to investors, partners, customers, and stakeholders

‎- Featured promotion via AfCFTA platforms, digital channels, and flagship events

‎- Priority access to relevant AfCFTA platforms

‎- Exclusive engagement session with the Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat

‎- Tailored mentorship from industry leaders and business development advisory services

‎- Designation as AfCFTA Digital Innovation Champions (ambassadors for the challenge)

‎Additional benefits across levels include increased visibility, potential investment and partnership pathways, and connections that help solutions scale continent-wide.

‎Why This Opportunity Matters

‎The AfCFTA aims to create a single African market of over 1.3 billion people. Digital solutions are essential to translate policy into practical opportunities for the millions of MSMEs that form the backbone of African economies. This challenge provides a direct pathway for young innovators to contribute to that goal while gaining high-level visibility, mentorship, networks, and scaling support from the AfCFTA Secretariat and its partners.

‎‎If you or your team have an operational digital tool that helps African businesses trade more easily across borders, this is a strong opportunity to elevate it to continental level. Apply early, prepare a compelling evidence-based submission, and help shape Africa’s digital trade future.
