‎Africa’s Biggest black Nation Nigeria, is making huge strides towards embracing widescale adoption of sustainable green transportation systems as a replacement to fuel reliant Unsustainable transport infrastructures in the country

‎This new development comes as President Bola Tinubu has approved the roll out of 10,000 electric tricycles with the expansion of the initiative to other parts of the country approved for take-off through various regional development commissions.

‎‎In this new uprising, the Federal Government will roll out 10,000 electric tricycles into the Nigerian market in August 2026 as part of its strategy to improve public transportation and modernise the country’s logistics system.

‎‎Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 group, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications to the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.

‎‎Shettima said the tricycles would be distributed by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) for use across the North-East region and beyond, adding that President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the initiative to other parts of the country through the various regional development commissions.

‎‎According to the Vice President, the Tinubu administration is focused on transforming Nigeria’s transport system into an integrated logistics network that links ports, railways, CNG-powered trucks, inland waterways, airports and local feeder roads to drive commerce, agriculture, industry and national integration.

‎‎He explained that the administration’s transport reform agenda is anchored on the nationwide rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), major port upgrades and the strengthening of the country’s logistics chain, to improve working conditions for transport workers across the road, rail, maritime, aviation and pipeline sectors.

‎‎“Our vision is an unbroken logistics chain, where a container moves from a deep-sea port to a rail wagon, then to a CNG-powered truck, then to a trader in Ariaria Market or Maiduguri, without delay or policy failure,” he said.

‎‎Shettima also highlighted the progress of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, noting that it has demonstrated the viability of using Nigeria’s domestic gas resources to reduce transportation costs, particularly for heavy-duty vehicles.

‎‎“We said CNG could cut fuel costs by over 60 per cent, and many called it fantasy. Today, heavy-duty trucks run on Nigerian gas, proving sceptics wrong and returning money to your pockets,” he stated.

‎“This administration shall continue to stand with the Nigerian transporter. We shall continue to fight for affordable fuel, insurable fleets, bankable contracts, and dignified working conditions. We shall build roads that last, rails that stretch across this great nation, ports that breathe, and airports that reflect our pride,” he added.

This new development is a very welcomed development and it comes at a crucial time for the Nigeria as the country continues to grapple with the excruciating stings of the fuel subsidy removal which has led to a huge spike in fuel pump prices.

‎The roll out of 10,000 Electric Motorcycles will help to reduce reliance on fuel for Public transportation. This method of transportation, will also provide a cleaner and more efficient means of transportation while creating Thousands of new job opportunities for Nigeria’s large youthful Unemployed Populace.
