Nigerian robotics engineer Ubokobong Amanam has developed and commercially launched a lightweight, rechargeable robotic rehabilitation glove designed to help stroke survivors and people with hand impairments regain mobility and function. Through his company, Ubokobong Robotics, based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, STAR ⭐ Inventor Amanam positions the device as Nigeria’s first commercially mass-produced wearable medical robot.

Today, Stroke remains a major public health burden. Globally, more than 12 million people experience a stroke each year, with millions left with long-term disabilities. In Africa, incidence rates are among the highest worldwide with up to 316 per 100,000 in some estimates and prevalence can reach 1,460 per 100,000 in certain Nigerian regions.
Many Stroke survivors face hand stiffness, weakness, numbness, or paralysis that severely limits daily activities. This comes as access to consistent, specialized rehabilitation is often limited by cost, geography, and scarcity of equipment and trained therapists, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Repetitive, guided movement is central to recovery because it promotes neuroplasticity which is the brain’s ability to form new neural pathways. Traditional therapy can be resource-intensive and hard to sustain at home. STAR ⭐ Inventor Amanam has designed his Robotic glove to bridge this gap by making structured, passive and guided hand exercises more accessible and frequent.
How the Bionic Robot Rehabilitation Glove Works
The glove is a soft, wearable device that assists finger and hand movement.

According to descriptions from the company in an interview with SeedufyTech, air is pumped into vacuum chambers at the back of each finger to initiate passive opening and closing motions. These repeated movements stimulate residual neural pathways, helping the brain rewire and supporting gains in mobility and muscle strength over time. The device is lightweight and rechargeable, intended for use in both clinical settings and at home.

Affordability was a deliberate design priority. The Robotic Gloves are priced between ₦270,000 and ₦350,000 per unit positioning them as more accessible than many imported rehabilitation technologies.
Ubokobong Robotics has distributed a handful of units for free to the public during a 2025 grassroots pre-launch programme and is seeking partnerships with NGOs, foundations, healthcare organizations, and government agencies to reach rural and low-income communities across Nigeria and Africa.
The official commercial launch was announced in mid-2026, with the company describing it as a milestone for Local Mass production of wearable medical robots.
STAR ⭐ Innovator Amanam’s work builds on earlier experience in bio-robotics. He previously contributed to the Ubokobong Bionic Arm (a hyper-realistic, functional prosthetic) while serving as Head of Bio-Robotics Research at Immortal Cosmetic Art, the company founded by his brother John Amanam. That effort was inspired by Ubokobong’s own experience of losing fingers in a New Year’s Eve firecracker accident years earlier, when suitable skin-matched prosthetics were unavailable in Nigeria. The bionic arm has since been used in multiple African countries.

Ubokobong Robotics, founded with a mission to solve everyday African challenges through practical robotics, also develops other systems, including a humanoid robot named Affiong used for demonstration and engagement. The rehabilitation glove represents a focused application of that vision to medical needs.
If scaled successfully with the planned partnerships he envisions, the device could expand access to structured hand rehabilitation beyond major urban centers, supporting recovery for stroke survivors, people with arthritis, nerve injuries, or other causes of hand dysfunction.
